then we hit the Yukon and oh boy did the road deteriorate...
The scenery was still beautiful and our overnight in destruction Bay on the Kluane Lake was fine, nice views, good power, water and good Internet!
After leaving Destruction Bay, the road greatly improved even though still in the Yukon. It started as a beautiful day and the scenery was great...
We passed an old 1890's mine...
As we neared Skagway, the weather started to deteriorate and before we knew it, we couldn't see in front of us as we traveled down an 11% grade in the rain and fog!
Okay, you get the picture! We hoped the weather would improve as we planned to take the White Pass Yukon railway trip back up the mountain, but in the fog it seemed pointless! We also planned a Fastboat Cruise to Juneau, but with 11 ft seas and heavy rain, we nixed that too! So we set out to view the shops in town. With 10000 cruise ship tourists, the town was crowded and the store owners were quite the hawkers...so reminded me of the Bahamas! Can you say International Diamonds and Tanzanite!
We did see a darling 1890's show that has been running for many years! And a great lunch spot, the Red Onion Brothel Museum and Saloon. Don Perrin, I think this replaces the girl with the Mexican sombrero pictures!
Later we watched the helicopters take off with cruise ship passengers on tours...tours of fog I guess!
As we enter our third and final day, the rain has not let up. Our plan is to do some brewery touring today...and that is our lemonade for the day! We move on to British Columbia tomorrow so we may be out of pocket until Labor Day if the campgrounds don't have wifi. See you soon! We will miss Alaska, it has been a wonderous place!
Well we made it just fine to Teslin, Yukon, a nice campground on the water! The trip up was great, that big ball in the sky was shining, yippee! We had what must have been a trainee at the border, she asked more questions than we have ever been asked including naming each campground where we were going to stay between there and Vancouver! She came onboard but did search. Even asked what was in our safe! Here are a few pics as on the way down it was gloomy and rainy before!
And our motel/gas station /campground where we will fill up for $1.50 a liter...do the math, not pretty!
