Teddy Roosevelt...where the buffalo roam

Today we left Jamestown, ND and arrived in Medora, ND earlier than expected due to the Mountain time change! The first thing we noticed was how the topography began to change, becoming more rugged but still pretty green. We came here to see Teddy Roosevelt National Park, not our campground which was mediocre. While TRNP isn't anywhere near as grand as Rocky Mnt or Yellowstone, it is an interesting smaller park. We started at Painted Canyon where you see a nice view of the Badlands and beautiful countryside where the canyons paint a beautiful array of colors. The badlands are dry terrain where the soil has been eroded and are characterized by steep slopes and often have terrific color.

Next we drove the 36 mile wildlife trail that did not disappoint! We saw many bison and while we have seen them many times, this was our first view of the babies! Many if the calves looked to be only a couple of weeks old as the stuck close to their mommas!

And just like Yellowstone...the bison are in charge...

A unique feature in TRNP are the wild horses.  just beautiful to see them running free...

And of course, what mid western park would be complete without cute little prairie dogs!

Toward the end of our trip we even saw a pronghorn

This is really a beautiful smaller national park. so glad we took time to see it!

Tomorrow we head out to Billings, MT, a stopover point for us!
