Dawson City...a happening town in 1898...today, not so much!

Today we toured Dawson a City. In 1898 it was THE Yukon Gold Rush Town with 30,000 people, today it has about 1900 people and a few restored buildings or building fronts but many dilapidated ones too! Touring today made us really appreciate even more our home town Williamsburg. I knew we were lucky because Colonial Williamsburg has a wonderful Foundation with Rockefeller funds to help support our great historic area.

A few areas looked great...

Some were just restored store fronts...

Others looked pretty bad...

We enjoyed the Dawson City Museum, a history of the area during the Gold Rush...

Restored cabins of Jack London and Robert Service were interesting...

We talked to the interpreter for quite a while and learned in addition to this job she worked in the Gold Mines. We didn't realize the Gold Mines were still operational, but she said last year they pulled out $93M.

Later today we decided to try out the little tiny ferry we will take across the Yukon to continue on to Alaska...one RV at a time, here is another RV making the trip...

Finally tonight about 9p.m. (I still can't get use to this daylight) we headed up past a working mine to Mountain Dome with a beautiful overlook of the city...

Wayne said (in his best Sarah Palin voice), "I think I can see Russia."

Tomorrow we are headed out to a Provencial Park for hiking and then on to Alaska!
